Religion highlights our inability to live up to a divine standard, thus creating a gap. But we don’t need religion to tell us that we really aren’t all that good. We fall short of our own expectations. We’ve all had to say, “I’m sorry” or “I was wrong.” Once we fail, there’s something in us that prompts us to try and make up for all our failures with better behaviour, generosity, or promises. The problem is, while we can do better going forward, there’s nothing we can do about the past. That’s what makes Easter amazing grace.
